Media Release – International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day 2024
Statement by the President of the Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association Mr. Savneel Sangeet Kumar on the occasion of International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day 2024

I am honoured to convey this message on behalf of the Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association as we commemorate International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day.
This year, we celebrate the 71st anniversary of the groundbreaking ascent of Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) by Sir Edmund Hillary and Shri Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.
Their accomplishment was truly extraordinary. Despite the absence of advanced technology, high-quality clothing, and equipment, and the unknown conditions at Sagarmatha’s higher altitudes, Sir Hillary and Shri Norgay triumphed in reaching the summit. Their feat has inspired millions worldwide and will continue to awe future generations.
We take great pride in the time Sir Hillary spent in Fiji. His ascents at Joske’s Thumb remain a cherished memory among Fijians, and the Fiji Rucksack Club he established continues to thrive.
The expedition to the summit of Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) was far from easy. Numerous individuals made several attempts to reach the summit. Shri Norgay himself made six attempts before finally succeeding.
Sir Hillary and Shri Norgay were part of the 9th British expedition when they reached the summit of Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) on May 29, 1953, at approximately 11:00 AM.
Mountain climbing demands immense dedication and introspection. It is not a race to the top. Every milestone achieved on any mountain is a victory in itself and deserves celebration.
Mountaineering is gaining popularity as a sport in Fiji. It is an affordable, if not free, activity that promotes health and fitness among our citizens.
We urge those who venture into the mountains to prioritize safety, respect the mountain communities and the natural surroundings, and avoid polluting the environment.
The Association is thrilled to see Fijians traveling abroad to pursue their mountaineering ambitions. These endeavors serve to strengthen Fiji’s bilateral relations with these countries.
Finally, I would like to extend my congratulations to all the mountaineers who participated in this year’s summer expedition to Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) and wish them the best for the winter expeditions. We also express our deepest sympathies to the families of the mountaineers who tragically lost their lives in the mountains.
Wishing you all a joyous Sagarmatha (Everest) Day.
May you continue to climb from peak to peak.
